Composition and Pharmacological Properties

Each EKS-5T tablet (0.05 g) contains 5 mg of megestrol acetate.

Pharmacological group: Hormones and their antagonists.

The active ingredient of EKS preparations — megestrol acetate — acts on the hypothalamic-pituitary system, blocking the secretion of gonadotropic hormones (FSH and LH). This produces anti-estrogenic and anti-ovulatory effects on the gonads, resulting in suppression of estrus behavior. Megestrol acetate also demonstrates notable anti-glucocorticoid activity.

In males, megestrol acetate reduces testosterone levels in the blood and indirectly influences the regulation of sexual behavior and related behavioral reactions, reducing aggression, anxiety, and excessive excitability.

Megestrol acetate is well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, metabolized in the liver to conjugates, and excreted (as metabolites) in the urine and feces. After discontinuation, 90% of the total dose is eliminated within 15 days.

Indications for Use

EKS is used in female dogs and cats to interrupt or delay estrus (shifting its onset) to prevent accidental mating and unwanted offspring; in male dogs and cats to reduce sexual activity and correct behavioral issues during the mating period (reducing aggression, hyperexcitability, hypersexuality, and territorial marking).

EKS-5T is used for cats and small dogs. The dosage depends on the sex of the animal and the purpose of use.

Contraindications

EKS suspensions and tablets are contraindicated in animals with hypersensitivity to the components.

They must not be used in animals with reproductive system diseases (pyometra, metritis, endometritis, etc.), mammary tumors, diabetes, pre-pubertal animals, pregnant or lactating females.

The product is not recommended during the first estrus due to difficulty determining the cycle onset.

Side Effects

When used according to instructions, side effects are generally not observed.

However, prolonged or repeated use may cause:

• Behavior changes (aggression or depression)

• Mammary enlargement

• Increased appetite

• Weight gain

Dosage and Administration

Suspensions are given orally as drops.

Tablets are administered forcibly to the base of the tongue or crushed into a small treat 1–2 hours before feeding.

It is necessary to record the date of estrus onset and the date of starting treatment.

For delaying estrus in cats:

EKS-5T tablets are given between estrus cycles:

• 1 tablet once every two weeks, OR

• 0.5 tablet once a week

Course duration: no more than 18 months.

Before a new course, wait for the cat’s normal estrus cycle.

To interrupt estrus:

Administer no later than the third day after onset:

• 1 tablet daily for 5–7 days, until signs disappear.

Estrus interruption should not be performed more than twice a year.

When estrus onset is difficult to determine, delaying is preferred over interrupting.

For reducing sexual activity and correcting unwanted behavior in male cats:

EKS-5T is administered:

• 1 tablet once daily for 5–7 days,

Then:

• Once weekly until behavioral correction is achieved.

For delaying estrus in female dogs (bitches):

Administer 7–15 days before expected estrus at a dose of:

0.5 mg megestrol acetate per kg of body weight per day.

Duration: depends on desired delay, but not more than 32 days.

Estrus may begin a few days after stopping the product.

After prolonged use (~1 month), estrus usually begins 4–6 months, sometimes 2–9 months later.

No more than two courses per year are recommended.

For interrupting estrus in female dogs:

Administer at first signs (bloody discharge), but no later than day 3:

2 mg megestrol acetate per kg of body weight per day.

• First 3 days: full daily dose

• Next 7 days: half the daily dose

Estrus typically resumes 4–6 months, sometimes 2–9 months after stopping the product.

Use is recommended no more than twice a year.

For reducing sexual activity in male dogs:

Administer 2 mg/kg/day for 7 days, then — if improvement is noted — continue with half dose for 2 more weeks.

Special Instructions

EKS is compatible with non-hormonal medications and feed additives.

Prolonged combined use with corticosteroids is not recommended.

Storage

Store EKS products in the manufacturer’s sealed packaging, in a dry place protected from direct sunlight, away from food and feed, at 5°C to 30°C.

Shelf life:

• Emulsions — 2 years

• Tablets — 3 years

Do not use after the expiration date.
