Composition and Pharmacological Properties
BARS® insecticidal-acaricidal collar contains the following active substances:
Fipronil – 40 mg/g and Diflubenzuron – 1.0 mg/g, as well as polyvinyl chloride plastisol, plasticizer, eucalyptus essential oil, red-brown iron oxide pigment, and “Basko” chocolate fragrance concentrate.
The BARS® collar provides a wide spectrum of insecticidal-acaricidal action against adult and immature (larval) stages of fleas, lice, chewing lice, and ixodid ticks parasitizing dogs.
Fipronil, included in the formulation, belongs to the phenylpyrazole group of insectoacaricides.
Its mechanism of action is based on slowing the movement of chlorine ions through synaptic channels in nerve cell membranes. By affecting gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors in ectoparasites (fipronil does not affect mammalian GABA receptors), the transmission of nerve impulses is disrupted, leading to paralysis and death of the parasites.
Diflubenzuron belongs to the group of chitin synthesis inhibitors.
It acts on larval stages of arthropods by inhibiting the synthesis of glucose involved in the formation of chitin, disrupting the process of chitin formation in the exocuticle. As a result, nonviable larvae develop, preventing transition to the adult stage, stopping egg-laying, egg hatching, and the growth of the parasite population.
As fipronil and diflubenzuron are gradually released from the collar surface, they do not enter the bloodstream. Instead, they distribute across the animal’s body and accumulate in the epidermis, hair follicles, sebaceous glands, and coat, providing long-term contact insectoacaricidal protection (effective before a bite). Protection begins 24 hours after application.
